Epoxy Resin

  • Epoxy is the kind of resin used on all of Ashley's boards

  • Much lower VOC's are released using Epoxy resin rather than polystyrene resins

  • Rather than using conventional polyester resins (which have a greater environmental footprint) Ashley has switched over to using a biobased epoxy. Her boards are a part of the ECOBOARD project and movement with Seatrees

EPS or PU foam?

EPS (Expanded Polystyrene foam)

  • Must use Epoxy resin for glassing and ding repair

  • Lightweight and rigid

  • More buoyant than PU

  • More vibrationally sensitive or “chattery” feeling than PU

  • *Pair with Flax cloth to dampen vibrationally sensitivities and smooth the ride

PU (Polyurethane foam)

  • Can be glassed with polyester resin or Epoxy resin

  • “Classic feel,”  More dense than EPS

  • generally heavier feel than EPS, comes in a variety of weights

  • Traditional style longboards are made with PU

Flax Cloth

  • Cloth made from flax plants can be glassed into your surfboard!

  • Remarkably strong

  • Vibration dampening

  • Incorporating Flax smooths out the “chattery” feel of EPS foam.
